Curator’s note

Ukiyo-e means pictures of the floating world: actors, courtesans, travellers, landscapes in the rain. An Edo-period print was never a rare object: it was a popular image, printed in the hundreds and sold for the price of a bowl of noodles. We look at it today as a work of art.
